Maths Club

Maths Club is a revision session run for the students in Year 10 or 11 who will sit a GCSE exam in the future. It is designed to allow students to have access to more time with staff who can support them in developing the key skills they need and the working on their individual areas for development.

The sessions run on a Wednesday and Thursday afterschool from 3:30 to 4:30. It is entirely student and parent choice whether students attend or not.

This year I’m delighted to be able to say that 100% of the current GCSE cohort in year 11 signed up for Maths Club and some even did both days!

The impact on students has been improved confidence, stronger skills, greater responsibility for their own learning and a sense of being part of a team.

Feedback from our students

Maths club helped me revise on certain topics so I could improve upon my weak spot.

Maths club was a great opportunity to get more revision before my exam. It helped me work on poor areas and improve upon them.

Maths Club was helpful as it gave me an extra maths lesson after school in the middle of the week for preparing for the maths exam.

Below is a graph showing one terms impact upon student’s areas for development. Percentages are generated by how many of the questions in that topic area students managed to answer correctly in their mock examination papers.

Two students have not been included in this graph as they have swapped specifications and one student swapped tiers which had a huge impact on the expectations for each topic area.

maths 1

For some students this represents a percentage increase of over 300%. The least percentage increase represent is 47%.

The graph below shows the change in overall score for students in Year 11 who have attended maths club this year.

The coloured lines represent where the grade boundaries have been on average between 2010 and 2016.

From this year onwards students will be entered for the new 9-1 specification meaning they will receive a number instead of a letter with a 9 being the top grade an approximate equivalent to an A** on the old specification.

Currently no grade boundaries have been released for the 9-1 specification.

After School Clubs

Our after school clubs take place every Wednesday & Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30pm. Students should be collected at 4:30pm as there is no transport available.

Clubs are allocated on a first come first served basis and there are restrictions on the number of students who can attend. For queries relating to after school club, please contact Shelley Baxter on 0191 5536000 or 07398044769 between 3:30pm and 4:30pm.

Saturday & Holiday Clubs

Every Saturday we hold two clubs for young people at Barbara Priestman Academy. Children and young people who are entitled to this specialist short break care as part of their plan are able to access these clubs. Our morning club is attended by 11-18 year olds. Children and young people attend the clubs from across Sunderland and our neighbouring towns and villages. All of our staff are fully trained to support the needs of each member of the short break provision.

We provide a variety of fun and exciting activities on Saturday’s. All of our children and young people engage and enjoy the activities mostly because of the range of choices in each club. For instance we have cooked pizzas, cakes and made our own sandwiches. There are a variety of craft activities all based around the theme of the day. We have celebrated Chinese New Year, Christmas and Bonfire night that included creating firework paintings, Christmas cards and salt dough decorations. Children and young people also made Chinese dragons and have written their name in Chinese.

All of our children and young people love to attend our swimming sessions. We provide a quiet session for those who want to have a quiet swim and a fun filled session with floats, balls and music for the more adventurous! The staff enjoy it as much as the children!

At the end of both morning and afternoon club, children and young people can choose to go into the multi coordination room or back in to our crafts room for some quiet time before their parents pick them up.

If you have a child who is eligible to attend and who would like to socialise and have fun too, please get in touch today! You can contact Shelley Baxter, at Barbara Priestman Academy, who will be more than happy to talk you though the application process.
