Information for New Parents

We realise that a move to Barbara Priestman Academy is a big step and families frequently worry that their child will be unknown and feel insecure in a new, large and unfamiliar environment.

To try and reduce this worry and to help us know your child better we begin the transition process in the Spring Term before your child is due to start at Barbara Priestman.  Once the EHCP (Education Health Care Plan) names Barbara Priestman as the secondary provision, we do everything possible to ensure that we know and are ready to meet the needs of each individual who will transfer to our academy.

Before and following the review families are given the opportunity to visit and to have any questions answered by a member of our staff.other support

Transition Timetable

We have provided a transition timetable so you know what you can expect. We hope this is helpful to new and prospective parents.

Prior to February – Parents discuss options available to their child at the primary school EHCP meeting.

February to May – Discussions take place with the primary school and information is transferred to Barbara Priestman Academy. Deputy Head and Transition Lead for KS3/4 contact primary schools and arrange a visit to meet the student.

An informal meeting is arranged for students and families to attend Barbara Priestman Academy this allows students and families to meet each other and some of the BPA staff.

Summer Term – Transition Lead for KS3/4 works with the students in their primary schools 1 morning or 1 afternoon a week for 3 weeks, extra dates are allocated if we feel this needs to be done.

Students come into Barbara Priestman Academy 1 morning, 1 afternoon and 3 full days, the students are supported by their current staff in this process.

Current staff and Barbara Priestman Academy staff work alongside each other.

A tasting session is arranged with our chef for students and families so they can see and taste the food that we have available at lunchtime.

End of June – Early July –Students are allocated to Year 7 class(es)  Children come into school to meet their new class-mates and staff.  Families are invited into school to meet the staff, ask questions, and complete Health Care Plans
